VG Mathers road haulage collapse has left seven jobs lost after VG Mathers Limited entered liquidation following nearly 60 years in business. Colin Mathers said the Kintore firm had been overwhelmed by a relentless series of challenges and could no longer keep trading.
He said the business had been hit by skyrocketing fuel costs, soaring insurance premiums, mounting compliance burdens and rising vehicle-maintenance costs. The company said those pressures restricted cash flow and left it with no other choice.
VG Mathers Limited in Kintore
VG Mathers Limited was established in 1968 by Vic Mathers and became a known haulage business in Aberdeenshire. It also carried out vehicle inspections and repairs, so the closure reaches beyond one type of work and ends a long-running local operation at once.
Colin Mathers, a director and the founder’s son, said: “For years, our team has poured everything into keeping our wheels turning, but we have ultimately been overwhelmed by a relentless series of challenges.” He also said: “I want to express my deepest gratitude to our loyal staff, our dedicated drivers and our wonderful clients who stood by us. This is a very difficult outcome for us and our team, but the economic reality left us with no other choice.”
MHA and Michael Reid
Michael Reid of MHA has been appointed liquidator and will oversee the winding-up process from the firm’s Aberdeen office. MHA’s head of insolvency services in Scotland said VG Mathers is a further example of a business facing significant pressures, resulting in job losses.
That process puts Reid in charge of handling the company’s winding-up rather than any trading recovery. For staff and clients, the immediate practical change is that the business has stopped trading and the seven jobs tied to it have gone with the closure.

Colin Mathers said: “In this industry, we are used to navigating tough times, but recently it has felt like one thing after another. We are far from alone in this struggle, with around 400 UK road haulage and freight companies closing in 2025 alone.” The company said the cumulative cost pressure had become too much to absorb.
The unresolved question is whether any part of VG Mathers Limited’s business, assets or contracts will continue after liquidation. For now, the firm’s trading has ended, the jobs have gone, and the winding-up work has moved to Michael Reid in Aberdeen.
