Monterrey, meanwhile, reached the final after a much shorter project under Matías Almeyda. The coach took over in June and has now guided Rayados into a title match after only three months in charge. Monterrey advanced by drawing 2-2 with América in 90 minutes before winning 5-4 on penalties.
What the final means
Almeyda said the run reflects the right direction for Monterrey. “Uno compite siempre para llegar a las finales. En tres meses lograr una final nos marca el camino correcto. Más allá de los penales, estoy muy contento por todo lo hecho en este torneo,” he said.
Beyond the trophy itself, the winner will also earn a direct berth into the octavos de final of the Copa de Campeones de la Concacaf 2027. That adds another layer to a final already shaped by form, timing and a coaching matchup that gives Toluca vs Monterrey even more weight.
It is a familiar kind of test for Toluca, which has turned recent success into another chance to add to its resume. For Monterrey, the final offers a quick chance to validate a new era under Almeyda. Either way, Sunday’s game in Houston carries significance well beyond the 90 minutes.
