Ian Poulter Lahinch Bar tab became part of the Saturday story at Lahinch Golf Club, but the scorecard mattered more: Great Britain and Ireland led the USA 6½-5½ after day one of the Walker Cup. Luke Poulter won the final match of the day, giving GB&I a one-point edge heading into the Sunday finish.
Saturday also carried a second layer of drama in the morning foursomes. Niall Sheils Donegan and Josh Hill were four up after eight holes against Josiah Gilbert and Ryder Cowan, then Donegan missed a six-foot birdie putt at the ninth and picked up his ball believing the lead had been extended.

Josiah Gilbert and Ryder Cowan said the putt had not been conceded, and Ryder Cowan called an official. The USA were awarded the hole, but the match still ended 4&3 to Niall Sheils Donegan and Josh Hill, and Great Britain and Ireland took the morning session 2½-1½.
Donegan accepted culpability for the incident and later put it in plain terms: "I hit the six-footer and missed it like an idiot. I had a foot back, and I just dragged it away like I'm in a Sunday bounce game, but those aren't the rules of golf." He added: "You screw up, but it's not about how you screw up; it's about how you bounce back and we bounced back amazingly."
Poulter, Russell and the singles
Graham Connor and Tyler Weaver added another point with a one-hole victory over Jay Leng Jr and Kihei Akina, while Eliot Baker and Stuart Grehan halved their match with Preston Stout and Ethan Fang. Miles Russell and Tyler Watts then beat Luke Poulter and Sam Easterbrook with a birdie on the 18th hole, a result that kept the match close before the afternoon singles.
Luke Poulter answered in one of the eight singles matches on Saturday afternoon, beating Miles Russell after starting strongly, losing the 12th and 13th holes, then winning the 15th to move ahead again. That swing was enough to close out the day with GB&I in front, and it left the side chasing a first Walker Cup win since 2015 still controlling its own outcome.
Sky Sports on Sunday
The Walker Cup conclusion is set for Sunday on Sky Sports from 8am, with Great Britain and Ireland carrying a one-point lead into the final session. The day-one split makes the next round simple: hold the edge, and the start built at Lahinch Golf Club becomes a result.
