LG smart TV network security is in focus after Gamers Nexus, Level1Techs, and independent security researchers found that several LG TVs could identify devices on a home network and capture audio through a microphone even when the TV appeared to be off. The findings matter because a television now sits on the same network as phones, laptops, printers, and smart-home hardware.
Packet captures and firmware analysis showed the tested TVs identifying phones, PCs, printers, switches, and smart-home devices. The same investigation said the sets collected nearby Wi-Fi network names, signal information, and device-related identifiers, which gives a compromised TV a map of what is already on the network.
LG TVs and local network mapping
The researchers used several LG TV models for the investigation. That matters to owners because the issue is not limited to a single set, and the behavior reaches beyond viewing data into the structure of the home network itself.
Smart TVs combine internet access, microphones, app stores, and advertising systems. They also sit on the same network as devices people rely on every day, so a television that can identify nearby hardware creates a broader entry point than a screen alone.

The researchers demonstrated that a compromised TV could capture audio through its microphone even when the TV appeared to be off. They also showed that the TV stored audio when it was unplugged from the internet and retrieved it after the connection was restored, which means an offline-looking set can still hold data for later access.
That leaves owners with a practical choice: treat the TV as part of the network, not just a display. If the set stays connected, it can sit in the same trust zone as family devices that may hold personal files, messages, or work material.
