Retroid has teased the Retroid Pocket Duo, a new dual-screen handheld console, in a shadowed video on X with EXTREMELY ROUSING MUSIC. For Nintendo DS fans and retro-gaming handheld buyers, the teaser adds another option to a small but crowded field where hinge quality, display choice, and shipping speed can decide whether a device is worth waiting for.
Retroid Pocket Duo on X
The teaser shows the Pocket Duo as a dual-screen handheld, which is the clearest signal yet that Retroid wants a place in the modern DS-style market. That matters because Retroid already has a track record with the Pocket Flip and an add-on display, so this is not a random experiment.
Retroid’s earlier dual-screen efforts make the new machine easier to read. The Pocket Flip and the add-on display pointed at interest in stacked screens, while the Pocket Duo suggests a fuller product rather than a bolt-on idea.
RG DS Plus and Ayn Thor
Anbernic has already released the RG DS Plus, and some people have criticized it as more like an RG DS Minus. The Ayn Thor uses dual AMOLED displays, but its long lead times for shipping make it a different kind of gamble for buyers who want a second screen soon.
That leaves the Pocket Duo with a narrow brief. The writer wants it to match the Pocket Nova’s quality in power, controls, display, and build, and also wants an insanely robust hinge, because a clumsy joint would sink the whole point of a clamshell dual-screen handheld.
What Retroid has not shown
The teaser stops short of the details that decide a purchase. There is no price, no release date, and no specification sheet to compare against the RG DS Plus, the Ayn Thor, or even Retroid’s own Pocket Nova.
So buyers can read the teaser as a promise, not a verdict. If Retroid wants the Pocket Duo to win over Nintendo DS fans, it still has to show the part that matters most: the hardware, the hinge, and whether it can stay affordable enough to justify a wait.
