André Silva has described his return to FC Porto as the most emotional decision of his career, saying the club where he began still carries the deepest personal meaning for him. Silva’s route back to Porto has taken him through Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt and Leipzig, but he made clear that the connection to his first club never faded. This is not simply a sentimental homecoming. It is also a return to the Champions League stage, with Silva underlining that the competition mattered in his thinking.
FC Porto is still the club of his heart
“FC Porto is the club of my heart,” Silva said. “I grew up here, my family did too, and this is where I started playing football. That was undoubtedly the most emotional factor.”
That is the core of the story. For Silva, this was not a case of choosing the easiest sporting option or the most rational one. He admitted the move was “the most difficult, if we analyze it only from a rational point of view”, but the emotional pull of FC Porto outweighed everything else.
He also made clear that the club’s presence in the Champions League helped shape the decision. “The fact that FC Porto are playing in the Champions League also helped with the decision,” he said, “but even if they weren’t, it would still be the club that means the most to me.”
Champions League ambition still matters
There is a practical side to the return as well. Silva has 28 Champions League appearances and ten goals behind him, and he believes the competition remains one of the best places to test himself again.
“Twenty-eight matches and ten goals are decent numbers, even if they may not seem very impressive,” he said. “My goal is always to improve myself, to give everything I have. And I believe the Champions League is one of the best stages to do that.”
That is an important line, because it shows the move is not just about nostalgia. Silva still sees room to grow, and he still views the Champions League as the right platform to prove it. For FC Porto, that makes him more than a symbolic signing. He is a player returning with experience, motivation and a clear sense of why the move matters.
