Carole Radziwill said the timing of Love Story during her return to RHONY made the experience intensely emotional. The overlap brought a private family history back into public view just as she was rejoining the show for Season 16.
Radziwill, 63, said she could not talk for like, two minutes when Andy Cohen called her after BravoCon in November to ask if she would return. She said she marinated around the idea for a few months before signing on and beginning to film around the same time Love Story premiered in February.
Andy Cohen’s November call
Radziwill joined The Real Housewives of New York City in Season 5 in 2012, then left in July 2018 after wrapping Season 10. She said the return surprised her, and the call from Cohen left her momentarily speechless. That reaction fits the math of the comeback: she had been away from the franchise for years, then re-entered it while a widely watched dramatized version of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s story was circulating around her again.
Radziwill said, “I was like, ‘I don't understand what you're saying.’” She also said, “shocked,” a blunt description that matches how abruptly the offer landed after she had already moved on from the show.
Love Story during filming
Love Story is the Ryan Murphy-produced anthology series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s meeting, romance, and deaths. Radziwill said, “That show, really, it was like a body slam,” and added, “It was a very emotional time for me.”
She said she did not watch Love Story, but she could not avoid the attention around it. Martha Stewart watched it, and the other women on the cast watched it and were curious about it. Radziwill said, “I didn't watch it, but you couldn't get away from it.”
What she wrote instead
Radziwill said, “I hadn't planned on talking about it,” and added, “I wrote about it.” That choice points to a familiar line for her: she was willing to return to RHONY, but not necessarily to narrate every part of the Kennedy-family history out loud in front of the cameras.
She had already described her departure from the show as driven by the fact that her “original curiosity about reality television has waned over the years” and by a preference for “TV and writing projects that better suit my more steady temperament.” The contradiction is the story: she stepped away because the format no longer fit, then came back anyway when Cohen called and the overlap with Love Story made the return feel loaded.
RHONY Season 16 premieres on Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and streams Wednesdays on Peacock, and Radziwill’s return now arrives with one unresolved question hanging over it: how much of her on-camera comeback will stay with Love Story and how much will move past it.
