Ryan Seacrest put the Wheel of Fortune season 44 format change on the board with Fortune Frenzy, a rapid-fire game that opens the show and gives contestants a shot at $1,000. The new setup arrives ahead of the Monday, Sept. 14 debut, so the first minutes of the episode now carry more of the game’s payoff.
Seacrest adds speed at the top
On Good Morning America, Seacrest said, “A lot of people say, ‘How do you get more games into the show?’” He followed that with, “That’s not a long show, so we’re squeezing more gameplay in at the top of the show with a rapid fire game that we just started to add, which I love.”
That design puts the quickest action first. Contestants do not have to wait through the usual setup before getting a chance to solve on-air for money, and the format concentrates the stakes into the opening stretch rather than spreading them across the hour.
Vanna White on the pace
White framed the opening sequence as a test of focus, saying, “Yes, there’s nothing else to think about but ‘solve that puzzle.’ It’s gotta be quick, so they have nothing else on their mind but solving,”
Seacrest also said, “The adrenaline is pumping and rushing, and they’ve got to focus right into playing the game, and I noticed that with some of the first episodes.” The structure is built to cut straight to the puzzle, which gives the season a faster start and a clearer path to the $1,000 prize.
Jim Thornton and the rollout
The new gameplay announcement comes days after Jim Thornton’s employment with Wheel of Fortune was terminated, effective immediately. Sony Pictures Television Studios said that after he was suspended on Sept. 1, while TMZ reported on Sept. 2 that the show was rushing to edit him from the upcoming season.
Allison Hart said Thornton “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested and has not been charged with any crime.” She also said he had been misdirected to lifeline.chat despite allegedly meaning to visit 988lifeline.org and its chat forum,. The timing leaves season 44 with a visible reset: a new opening game, a new money target, and a reduced role for the announcer slot.
