The original iPhone Air had a rail-thin construction, but its compromises became impossible to ignore, and the standard iPhone 17 was previously argued to be the superior phone between the two. For buyers, that means thinness alone was not enough to justify the tradeoff, especially when camera utility sat lower than on the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
Apple knows it has to redeem the iPhone Air 2 in a big way. Early rumors and leaks suggest the company is aiming at the pain points that kept premium-phone buyers away from the iPhone Air.
48MP main camera for iPhone Air 2
The rumored 48MP main camera would give the iPhone Air 2 the same headline resolution tier as the ultrawide lens. In practical terms, that points to less mismatch between the two rear cameras and fewer situations where users have to choose between reach and scene width.
The leaked dual-camera setup would also add a 48MP ultrawide shooter. An ultrawide lens can capture more expansive scenes, feed depth data for more natural subject separation in portrait mode, and make walk-and-talk recording easier.
Surprise and Shine delay
Apple is reportedly delaying the iPhone Air 2 launch to focus on iPhone Ultra, iPhone 18 Pro, and 18 Pro Max for the Surprise and Shine event next week. That leaves the Air line waiting while Apple puts its immediate attention on the models it seems ready to push first.
The unresolved question is whether Apple will actually ship the rumored dual-camera system in the iPhone Air 2, or whether these leaks will stay at the planning stage while the company reshuffles its lineup around the Surprise and Shine event next week.
