The Los Angeles Lakers are adding another experienced voice to their front office, hiring Miami Heat vice president of player personnel Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager, according to ’s Shams Charania.
The move continues a broader buildout under Rob Pelinka, who has already overseen the addition of Rohan Ramadas as assistant general manager of strategy and data systems. With two assistant general managers in place, the Lakers are clearly expanding the support around their basketball operations staff.
Why the hire matters
Amsler brings over 22 years of experience with the Miami Heat organization, where he began as an intern before rising to vice president of player personnel. That kind of long-term internal development is part of what the Lakers appear to value as they try to strengthen multiple areas of decision-making.
The timing also fits the way the NBA has changed under the new CBA. Pelinka has said player development is becoming increasingly important in a salary-cap system, and that point helps explain why teams are putting more emphasis on identifying, drafting and developing talent.
Pelinka also noted that development is not limited to younger players, saying there can be development of veteran players too that are still young. That philosophy gives the Lakers another lens for building out their roster and front office at the same time.
