Microsoft said today that Xbox will publish Hideo Kojima's physical intelligence project PHYSINT instead of Sony. The change moves one of Kojima Productions' most closely watched games onto a different platform holder and widens a partnership that already includes OD.
Hideo Kojima and Xbox
Hideo Kojima said, "This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD." He also said, "As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world." The phrasing points to a deal built around more than one title: Xbox will keep publishing OD, and now it will handle Physint as well.
Asha Sharma added, "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life," and said, "We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint." She also said, "His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox." That is the clearest business signal in the announcement: Microsoft is treating Kojima Productions as a long-term creative partner, not a one-off publishing client.
PlayStation and Physint
The shift carries extra weight because Physint was heavily backed by Sony when it was announced. During the State of Play broadcast in 2024, Hermen Hulst said Kojima Productions was partnering with PlayStation on a new project and that Sony would fully support it with the latest innovations it had to offer. Kojima also described Physint as an interactive game and a movie at the same time, a sign that the project was being sold as a hybrid ambition from the start.
That earlier setup makes the new publisher a sharp reversal rather than a routine deal update. Xbox is now taking over a project that was presented with strong PlayStation involvement, while the Kojima-Xbox relationship expands beyond game publishing into film and television. For readers tracking platform strategy, that is the practical change: Physint is no longer tied to the publisher that originally helped frame it.
5-6 years for Physint
Kojima said last year that Physint was likely another 5-6 years away, which pushes the project well beyond the immediate release window. If that timeline holds, OD arrives first and Physint stays in the long game while Xbox keeps building around Kojima Productions across games, film, and television.
The most important open question is what caused Physint to move from Sony to Xbox. For now, the answer that matters to readers is simpler: the publisher has changed, the creative relationship has broadened, and Physint is still early enough in development that the business around it may keep shifting before release.
