Lu Qi linked sleep-time light exposure to measurable changes in the heart after studying 11,071 people from UK Biobank. The research, published in European Heart Journal on September 10, 2026, found that people exposed to more than three lux at night had thicker left ventricle walls and other structural changes.
Participants wore wrist light sensors for seven days, then returned three years later for cardiac MRI scans. The comparison was drawn between those exposed to more than three lux at night and those exposed to almost no light at night, giving the study a direct before-and-after structure rather than a one-night snapshot.
Lu Qi and the sleep exposure
Lu Qi, a Professor at Tulane University, said, "Previous observational studies have linked nighttime light exposure with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, but little is known about the related cardiac structure and functional changes. We carried out this research to find out what happens to the heart over time when people are exposed to too much light at nighttime." He added, "This is the first study of its kind, and it shows that exposure to higher levels of light at nighttime is linked to cardiac remodelling."
The study defined that remodeling as a change in heart structure and function that is typically seen in response to chronic stress or injury to the heart. In practice, the scans showed a smaller space inside the left ventricle chamber, signs that the heart muscle’s ability to flex during a heartbeat was reduced, and changes in the right ventricles and left atria. The sample size and scan timing make this more than a brief exposure check; they show how a sleep-environment factor can line up with later heart changes.
European Heart Journal findings
The research does not turn that link into proof that nighttime light causes the changes. It remains an observational finding, which means the study shows a pattern between exposure and later MRI findings, not a direct test of whether reducing light would prevent the remodeling.
Even so, Lu Qi said, "Light pollution has emerged as a new risk factor for cardiovascular disease." He also said, "Our findings, together with evidence from other studies, suggest that reduction of nighttime light exposure should be considered as one of the potential strategies for preventing heart disease by clinicians and policy makers."

Thomas Münzel, a Professor at University Medical Center Mainz, said in an accompanying editorial that clinicians managing patients with heart failure or atrial fibrillation should start asking about the sleep environment. He said they should ask how dark the bedroom is, whether the patient works night shifts, and how much screen use occurs after sunset.
Münzel also advised blackout curtains, warm-coloured bedside lighting, and covering the small standby LEDs on household electronics. He said light pollution is one of the few environmental hazards that cities can control directly and affordably, and said shielded fixtures, warm-spectrum bulbs, and dimming or motion-activated streetlights are already available, energy-efficient, and climate-friendly.
The unanswered issue is how much nighttime light exposure is enough to drive meaningful change over time. What this study adds is a reason to treat sleep darkness as a measurable part of heart health, especially for people who already carry cardiovascular risk.
