Chennai Super Kings are not in a hurry to name Stephen Fleming’s replacement, with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad saying the franchise still has plenty of time before the next IPL and the mini-auction.
The coaching vacancy opened up in July, when Chennai Super Kings and Fleming mutually decided to part ways. Fleming’s exit closes a major chapter for the franchise, after a run that helped shape one of the most respected and consistent set-ups in franchise cricket.
CSK are taking their time
Gaikwad made it clear that the franchise has started thinking about its next head coach, but is not feeling pressured to make a fast decision. “We will have a head coach. The management is obviously thinking about it. There is still plenty of time before the IPL, so there is no rush to make a decision,” he said.
That approach makes sense given Fleming’s long association with the team. He joined Chennai Super Kings as a player in 2008, then took over as head coach in 2009. Over the next one decade-plus, he became one of the key figures behind the franchise’s identity and stability.
Why the timing matters
Chennai Super Kings are coming off an eighth-place finish on the points table in IPL 2026, with six wins from 14 matches. That makes the next coaching appointment important, but it does not appear to be an emergency move.
For CSK, the bigger job is choosing the right successor rather than simply choosing quickly. The franchise has already lived through major transition before, and Gaikwad said the team is aware of the responsibility that comes with leading Chennai Super Kings, especially with the expectations that come after years of success.
He also pointed to the loyalty of the fan base, saying the franchise has been on an incredible journey since 2008 and that supporters have stayed with the team through both the glory years and the tougher stretches. For now, that same patience appears to be guiding the search for Fleming’s replacement.
