For a 2024 first-round pick, being moved to third string in Week 1 is not a small detail. It is a signal, and in the Minnesota Vikings’ case, it says as much about the present as it does about J.J. McCarthy’s future.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, Kevin O'Connell announced that Carson Wentz would be the primary backup for the opener against the Green Bay Packers, while McCarthy would sit behind him on the depth chart. That change came after the Vikings spent the lead-up to their 53-man roster keeping four quarterbacks in the room and sending Max Brosmer to the practice squad.
What the move means
The immediate answer is straightforward: if Kyler Murray cannot play in Week 1, Wentz is now the next man up. The deeper point is that Minnesota is no longer treating McCarthy as the clear step behind the starter, at least for now. That does not erase his long-term value, but it does change the shape of the quarterback conversation around the team.
That conversation grew louder after Murray was named the starter on Aug. 11. At that point, McCarthy’s future with the franchise had been thrown into question, and the Vikings made a clear decision not to trade or cut him before setting the roster. Keeping him around suggested patience. Sliding him to third string suggests that patience is being paired with caution.
Why Wentz is ahead right now
The simplest football explanation is familiarity. Last season, Wentz started five games in place of a banged-up McCarthy, and O'Connell said the current arrangement is week-to-week. He also said Wentz gives the Vikings the best chance to win, which is the kind of blunt coach-speak that usually leaves little room for interpretation.
O'Connell also made clear this was not a dismissal of McCarthy’s talent. He described him as a beacon of energy, said those traits will always be there for him, and added that McCarthy is still a young player with so much football ahead of him. In other words, this is not necessarily a verdict on the player’s ceiling. It is a decision about readiness, reps and who the staff trusts if it needs one snap’s worth of stability.
The bigger picture
That is where the J.J. McCarthy NFL trade rumors become more complicated, not less. The Vikings opted not to move him when the quarterback picture became uncertain, but the depth-chart shift shows why outside speculation does not disappear just because a player stays on the roster. A team can hold onto a young quarterback and still signal that his role is unsettled.
For now, the message is measured rather than dramatic. McCarthy is not out of the picture, and O'Connell said the staff would continue to work with him every day and watch his ascension. But with Week 1 here, the Vikings have chosen the safer, more experienced path behind the starter. That may be temporary. It may also be the first clear sign that McCarthy has more proving to do before he climbs back up.
