Robson Green says the game series 2 needs a third instalment after Channel 5 brought the second season to an end. The actor pushed the case for more after the run closed, but the broadcaster has not said whether Jason Watkins and Green will be back.
Robson Green and episode three
Green did not hedge when asked about another run. He said: "I think there now needs to be, for want of a better description, a caper where there is movement." He added: "Take these two characters on a physical, moving journey with a big dénouement. We just need a nice island in the Indian ocean."
He also tied that idea to the show’s central duel, saying: "Patrick needs Huw back in the game and Huw wants to be in the game. That’s how the two of them can function. It’s just this time they are across a table from each other."
Jason Watkins as Huw Miller
The second season placed Jason Watkins back in the frame as Huw Miller, the former detective who was one year on from surviving a brutal stabbing. That setup kept the series focused on the same pressure point: Patrick Harbottle, imprisoned for his crimes, had begun a new game from behind bars that reached deep into Huw’s family.
Green said the writing still had room to move forward, adding: "The way we manipulate the story this time is full of surprises." He also said: "Because as the audience you are thinking is Patrick one step ahead of Huw or is Huw two steps ahead of Patrick?"
Channel 5 and Forever Home
Channel 5 has not said whether Jason Watkins and Green will return to screens, which leaves the third instalment question hanging over the series even as the current run has finished. That is the real business decision now: whether the broadcaster keeps the pair in place or lets the drama end at two seasons.
From next week, Channel 5 will replace The Game with Forever Home, a six-part psychological thriller. It begins on Monday, September 14, at 9pm, with the opening instalment of three episodes, before Tuesday, September 15, and Wednesday, September 16, carry the rest. If The Game comes back, it will need to reclaim that slot from a show already lined up to take over it.
