Jhené Aiko new album Westside Whimsy arrives Friday, September 11, and Kendrick Lamar is on the twenty-track release. It is her fourth studio album and her first full-length project since Chilombo in March 2020.
The set lands via Def Jam Recordings, giving the rollout a clear commercial frame as Aiko returns with a larger project than a standard single-cycle push. Twenty tracks is a long tracklist by any measure, and it signals an album built to carry more than one lane at once.
Kendrick Lamar and Westside Whimsy
Kendrick Lamar’s appearance is the sharpest business point in the rollout because it reconnects two artists who have only crossed paths twice before. Their first link came in 2010 on Overly Dedicated track Growing Apart (To Get Closer), then again in 2013 on Stay Ready (What A Life) from Sail Out.
That gap turns this feature into more than a guest slot. A reunion nearly 13 years after the first collaboration gives Westside Whimsy a built-in reference point for listeners who track Aiko’s catalog as a timeline rather than a playlist.
California in Westside Whimsy
In April, Aiko tied the album’s sound to ’90s West Coast car culture, surfing culture and the mystic spirit of California in an interview with Jaelani Turner-Williams. She also said to Complex in April, “When I think of California, it’s just such a magical place and I love a good road trip and I’ve been doing them for many years,” which makes the album’s title sound less like branding and more like a mapped-out aesthetic.
That framing is backed by the earlier January rollout, when she first floated the Whimsy title through an Erewhon smoothie drop of the same name. The campaign has also run through ALEEL and a jewelry collaboration with Awe Inspired, which keeps the project tied to her California identity instead of treating the album as a one-off release.
Chilombo to September 11
Chilombo arrived in March 2020, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Westside Whimsy now inherits that commercial benchmark, with a release window that arrives more than six years later and leaves Aiko measured against her last major chart run.
Listeners do not just get Kendrick Lamar on the title rollout; Larry June, Ab-Soul, Tyga and OHMA are also listed as guests, with Larry June appearing on the track Neighbors. The open question is the twenty-track sequence itself, because the guest list gives the album range but not yet the full order that will tell listeners how Aiko has structured the record.
