Tottenham Hotspur have given Lucas Bergvall a new contract, rewarding the 20-year-old Sweden international after a rapid rise in north London.
The midfielder has already made 80 appearances for the club and has established himself as one of the most promising young players in Europe. His new deal comes after a season in which he continued to add to his experience and profile, both for Tottenham Hotspur and for Sweden.
Why Tottenham moved now
There is clear logic behind the extension. Bergvall arrived from Djurgarden in February 2024 and reached north London five months later, but he has settled quickly enough to become an important part of the group. In his debut Tottenham Hotspur campaign, he made 45 appearances in all competitions, showing he could handle a heavy workload at a major club.
His progress has continued into this season. In May 2025, Bergvall won a hat-trick of Player of the Season awards, then featured in the UEFA Super Cup in August. The following month, he scored a header in a 3-0 win at West Ham, another sign that his impact is growing beyond just minutes on the pitch.
A player with room to grow
Bergvall has also been part of important moments away from club football. In March, he was involved as Sweden secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a play-off win against Poland. This summer, he became the youngest Swedish player to appear at a World Cup, turning in a history-making outing against Tunisia at age 20.
For Tottenham Hotspur, the new contract is as much about the future as the present. Johan Lange said the club sees Bergvall as an outstanding young player with enormous potential, while Roberto De Zerbi highlighted his desire to learn, improve and take responsibility in big moments. Bergvall echoed that view, saying he believes the club is building something great and that it is the right place for him to keep developing.
