Cole Johnson says a viral claim about him fighting a chimpanzee has turned into something far more concrete. The amateur MMA fighter said he has organized a fight with a captive chimpanzee for Friday, September 11, after previously saying he was offered more than $500,000 to do it.
Johnson first drew attention with a social media post about beating a chimpanzee in a fight, a clip that reportedly gathered almost eight million views on TikTok. He later said on a podcast that he had been offered $500,000 to fly to an unnamed country and fight a chimp, before claiming he was en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo to work out a deal.
Why the proposed fight stands out
The latest version of the story raises the stakes even further because the fight is said to involve a captive animal, with the chimpanzee not sedated and still having its claws and teeth intact if it goes ahead. That detail is central to why primate experts have warned that the matchup would be severely dangerous.
Dr Kimberley Jane Hockings said, “The physical risks to the human participant are very real.” She also said chimpanzees are wild animals with sophisticated social and behavioural responses, and that when they perceive a threat they can respond with extraordinary aggression.
Hockings added that chimpanzees are extremely powerful animals, with substantially greater upper-body strength and dynamic muscle performance than humans, and that when they attack, the injuries can be catastrophic.
Experts warn the danger could escalate quickly
Professor Michael Wilson also raised concerns, saying there are “so many reasons” a chimpanzee fight would be a bad idea. He said the animal is unlikely to understand the fight as a game rather than a struggle for survival.
Wilson said chimpanzees appear easily provoked to extreme violence, and warned that a threatened chimpanzee could escalate to a severe fight that might leave the human injured or dead. He also said chimpanzees can use their hands to twist and tear parts of their opponent's body.
For now, Johnson's claim remains the center of the story: a man vs chimpanzee fight, a large payment offer, and a proposed date that has put a deeply unusual and risky idea into the spotlight.
