Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro Max in Cupertino, California, with a new 48MP Fusion Main camera that adds variable aperture for the first time on iPhone. Buyers of the Pro line get a more adjustable main camera, and Apple is tying that change to battery, performance, and intelligence upgrades that go beyond a routine refresh.

Fusion Main and four settings
The new Fusion Main camera uses six laser-cut blades to move between different apertures, and Apple says the system can adjust for depth of field and lighting while improving low-light photography and detail in the back of group photos. Users can manually adjust any of the four aperture settings in the Camera app, which means the phone is not locked to one look when the scene changes.
A20 Pro and iOS 27
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro models use A20 Pro and a next-generation vapor chamber to deliver the highest sustained performance in iPhone history, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max brings the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone. The company says that battery gain comes from Apple silicon advances and a larger battery, but it does not quantify the size of the increase, so buyers still have no apples-to-apples number to judge against the previous model.
September 12 and September 18
Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, and availability begins Friday, September 18, so buyers who want the new camera control or the larger battery claim have a short window before launch. The phones also come in black, silver, glacier, and burgundy, but the open question is still the same one that matters most: how large are the actual battery-life and performance improvements compared with the previous generation?
