El Niño winter weather impacts are already showing up in the winter 2026-27 outlook: The Weather Company expects frequent, reliable snowfall from Lake Tahoe to the Wasatch and Colorado Rockies, while the Northeast faces a rain-versus-snow gamble early in the season. That split could make the winter look very different by region.
The forecast is built around a strong El Niño, which is expected to push the jet stream north and tilt the pattern toward a warmer, drier winter from the Midwest into the Northern Rockies and Cascades. For mountain snow seekers, that means the Southern Rockies and Sierra sit in the favored band.
Southern Rockies and Sierra
Lake Tahoe, the Wasatch and the Colorado Rockies are the clearest winners in the setup. The outlook calls for frequent snowfall there, and it does not rely on one storm or a brief burst of cold air. It points to a pattern that should keep snow coming back through December 2026 through February 2027.
That matters because the forecast does more than call for snow somewhere in the mountains. It separates the areas most likely to keep building snow from the regions more likely to get a milder winter. Ski areas in the Southern Rockies and Sierra have the better chance to see regular accumulation if the pattern holds.
The Northeast in December
The Northeast starts with the harder problem. Early in the season, some precipitation may fall as rain instead of snow because there may not be enough cold air behind storms. In December 2026, much-above-average temperatures are likely from the Central Appalachians into New England, and the Midwest and Great Lakes are expected to get an unusually warm start to winter.
That warm opening does not lock the Northeast into a mild winter. In February 2027, the region is expected to see improved access to cold air and a stronger, colder finish to winter. Until then, the early-season mix leans less useful for snowpack and winter recreation than a colder pattern would be.
Midwest and Great Lakes
The same El Niño setup that favors snow in the Southern Rockies and Sierra also points to a warmer, drier winter from the Midwest into the Northern Rockies and Cascades. In January 2027, much of the northern half of the country is expected to stay above average in temperature.
The Weather Channel was found to be the world’s most accurate forecaster in ForecastWatch’s Global and Regional Weather Forecast Accuracy Overview, 2021-2024, commissioned by The Weather Company. This outlook carries that forecast background into a winter where the main question is not whether the pattern changes by region, but how sharply those regional splits show up once December 2026 through February 2027 begins.
