Marcus Kane has backed James Douglas to make the most of his opportunity as Glentoran prepare for Saturday’s BoyleSports Premiership meeting with Bangor at The BetMcLean Oval. The captain also made clear that, for all the disruption of injuries, the side know their early league form has not met the standards expected inside the dressing room.
Douglas has stepped into the team during the opening period of the season while injuries have affected selection, and Kane was keen to stress how well the young player has handled that chance. “Dougie has been brilliant since he stepped in,” Kane said, adding that sometimes injuries create openings for others and it is important to take them when they come.
He also pointed out that Douglas did not feature as much as he would have wanted last season, but described him as a talented player and said it has been good to see him back in the side. For Glentoran, that kind of response matters. In a squad hit by absences, every player who comes in is being asked to hold the level.
Why Glentoran need a response
Kane did not try to hide the reality of the opening weeks. He said the team probably has not been good enough and admitted that coming out of the European games, Glentoran did not carry real momentum into the league. It has been tough, he said, but not an excuse.
That is the key point in Glentoran’s season so far. The captain said the squad has had open and honest conversations about where they need to be better, and there have even been a few choice words between the players, the manager and the staff. In other words, the mood is not casual. It is urgent.
Kane’s message was simple: the team need to begin putting things right against Bangor on Saturday. He said three points could change the feeling around the ground and really kick the campaign on after a difficult start.
Bangor bring a physical test
Bangor are expected to offer a physical challenge in East Belfast, and Kane was clear that Glentoran will have to stand up to that. “It’s going to be aggressive and that’s something we’ll have to stand up to,” he said.
There is also confidence inside the camp that the squad will look stronger when a few of the injured players return. Kane said Glentoran have good depth and plenty of experience, and that the players who come into the side now have an opportunity to show what they can do.
That is the balance Glentoran are trying to strike: enough patience to ride out the absences, but enough standards to ensure the league does not drift away from them. Saturday at 3pm is another chance to reset that conversation.
