Instead, Prairie View vs Baylor has quickly become a reminder that football rarely gives anyone the neat script they want. Dave Aranda called him day-to-day on Monday, but by Friday the reports were already leaning in one direction. On Saturday, they were confirmed: Lagway was out, and Nate Bennett was in.
That is the reality Baylor now has to deal with. It is one thing to lose a quarterback and still have a veteran waiting in the wings. It is another to ask a player with zero career starts to walk into a home opener and run the offense from the opening snap. Against Prairie View A&M, that may still be enough. But it also changes the tone of the game, because the Bears are no longer simply trying to win — they are trying to win while learning what their next layer looks like under real pressure.
And that is why this matters. A matchup with Prairie View A&M, shown on +, should have been about Baylor setting a standard. Instead, it has become an early-season examination of depth, patience and how quickly a plan can be rewritten. If Bennett handles it cleanly, Baylor moves on with a useful data point.
