Seattle Reign FC hosted Bay FC on Saturday, September 12, at Lumen Field at 5 p.m. PT in the return leg of their season series, and the matchup carried different kinds of pressure for both teams.
For Seattle, the task was to protect an eighth-place position with Angel City two points behind. For Bay FC, postseason hopes were hanging on by the thinnest of threads, making every point feel essential this late in the season.
Seattle's momentum and a likely absence in goal
The Reign entered the match after a 1-0 win over San Diego last weekend, a result that extended their goal-scoring streak to 13 games. That run matched the club's all-time record from the 2014 season, giving Seattle a notable offensive marker to carry into a game with real table implications.
The bigger concern for Seattle was in goal. Head coach Laura Harvey said Claudia Dickey's deep facial wound and stitches were still an impediment, and the team was expected to give her a few more days to recover. Dickey suffered the injury last weekend after a collision while blocking a shot from Ludmila, making her status the main availability storyline for the Reign.
If Dickey was unable to play, Seattle had to manage the match without one of its key defensive pieces at a time when every result mattered. That made the margin for error smaller against a Bay FC side that still had some fight left, even if its playoff path was extremely narrow.
Bay FC still chasing points
Bay FC arrived in Seattle after a 2-1 home loss to the Kansas City Current, decided by a Rocky Rodriguez goal in the 89th minute. The result fit a difficult stretch for Bay, which had gone 1-4-1 in the weeks after the start of August, compared with Seattle's 4-1-2 run over the same span.
That contrast also showed up in the standings. Seattle was sitting in 8th place with 34 points and a 10-8-4 record, while Bay was in 15th place with a 4-1-2 mark over that recent stretch but still far back in the table. Bay had scored only 6 goals in the relevant stretch, while the team had allowed 4.3 goals against and had to lean heavily on its goalkeeper.
Jordan Silkowitz was one of the few bright spots for Bay FC. Three games earlier, she made 10 saves in a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash, and her standout shot-stopping has been one of the more useful signs for Bay despite the club's low standing. The question heading into Lumen Field was whether that kind of resistance could hold up long enough to keep Bay's slim postseason hopes alive.
In the end, the matchup reflected where both teams stood in September: Seattle trying to stay above the playoff line, and Bay FC trying to keep its season from slipping away entirely.
