Dan Campbell has left the Detroit Lions' left guard battle open for most of the week, but there is now a clear sign that Christian Mahogany may have edged ahead of Ben Bartch for the Week 1 opener against the New Orleans Saints. On Friday, Campbell said there was “probably a good chance” Mahogany starts on Sunday.
That does not make the decision final, and it does not completely shut the door on Bartch. But after Campbell said at the beginning of the week that the job was still up for grabs, this is the strongest indication yet that Mahogany is in position to get the first nod when the Lions line up in the season opener.
Campbell sees a close competition
The key detail is that Campbell has never framed this as a runaway. At the beginning of the week, he said Christian Mahogany and Ben Bartch would split reps in practice all week, which told the story of a real competition rather than a ceremonial one.
By Friday, though, Campbell sounded more convinced that Mahogany was ahead. Asked about the position, he said, “I don’t know. It’s a good question. I’m still thinking about that. There’s probably a good chance Mahogany starts,” while also adding, “I thought both of those guys did a really good job in practice.”
That is the sort of answer that suggests the Lions still value both players. It also suggests the coaching staff does not view the spot as locked in for the full season just yet.
Could the Lions rotate the spot?
Campbell had already said he would consider rotating the two in the game if no leader emerged, and that remains a possibility depending on how the opener unfolds. In other words, the decision for Week 1 may not be the same as the long-term answer at left guard.
That matters because the opener against the New Orleans Saints is often the first real test of whether a competition has a true winner. If Mahogany starts and settles in, the Lions may have their answer. If the position remains fluid, the rotation discussion could continue beyond Week 1.
For now, the message is simple: Mahogany appears to have the edge, Bartch is still in the mix, and Campbell is keeping the door open until the Lions see how it looks when the games matter.
