Mexico Independence Day celebrations will run across San Diego County throughout September, with El Grito ceremonies and cultural programs scheduled in several cities and venues. The holiday falls on Sept. 16, but local organizers are spreading observances across different dates so residents have more than one chance to attend.
Sept. 16 marks Día de la Independencia, which commemorates Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spain that began in 1810. The movement traces to Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and the Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores, a starting point that still shapes public celebrations in Mexico and the United States.

The Old Globe will host a free Mexican Independence Day celebration at The Old Globe Copley Plaza with mariachi and other live music, folklórico and charro dance performances, arts and crafts, food and lotería. Mexican Consul General Alicia Kerber will lead El Grito at the celebration, followed by the Mexican national anthem, giving the event its most formal civic moment.
That mix of ceremony and festival programming gives local residents a clear choice between public ritual and family-oriented activities. It also shows how a single holiday can be marked through both official observance and cultural performance across one county.
Grape Day Park and Memorial Park
USA Multicultural will host Fiestas Patrias at Grape Day Park from Sept. 12 through 13. The event will include banda, folklórico, food, a beer garden, a kids zone and El Grito, with programming spread across the afternoon and evening on both days, from 5 - 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.
In Chula Vista, the city will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with live entertainment, cultural performances, food and an official El Grito ceremony led by the Mexican Consulate’s office at 7 p.m. The formal timing gives families and workers a fixed evening option, while the earlier weekend festival at Grape Day Park offers a broader all-ages schedule.
Mavericks Beach Club and Rich’s San Diego
CAFETÓN: Coffee & Latin Beats will mark Mexican Independence weekend at Mavericks Beach Club with coffee, reggaetón, DJs and dancing for guests 21 and older. Rich’s San Diego will host STUNT Hispanic Heritage – Mexican Independence Day with queer pop, vogue and pop music from DJ K-Swift and Hip Hop from DJ PurFlo, adding a nightlife option to the countywide calendar.
The spread across San Diego, Chula Vista, Oceanside and other communities means the month is shaped less like a single ceremony and more like a sequence of separate choices. Residents can pick between a parish-based celebration, a free civic event, a family festival or an 21-and-older night out, but the list does not map a full countywide calendar.
