Washington is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and the Jaguars have reportedly explored a contract range similar to Michael Wilson's recent Cardinals extension. The benchmark matters because Washington's rise late last season suggested Jacksonville already views him as more than just a depth receiver.
Washington's role has already grown
Last month, Michael DiRocco reported that Washington had earned his spot as the Jaguars' WR1 after working as Trevor Lawrence's favorite target in training camp. That line was backed up by what happened over the back end of the previous season, when Washington's production jumped sharply.
In his third NFL season, Washington recorded 847 receiving yards in 16 games. Even more telling was the closing stretch, when he made 22 catches on 32 targets for 400 receiving yards and two touchdowns over the final four games of Jacksonville's push for the playoffs.
The late-season surge changed the conversation
Washington carried that form into the postseason as well. In the Wild Card round, he was targeted a team-high 12 times, caught seven passes for 107 receiving yards and scored a touchdown before the Jaguars were eliminated by the Buffalo Bills.
That kind of usage is exactly why contract talks have become part of the story. When a receiver moves into a featured role, the question is no longer just whether he can produce. It becomes whether the club can settle on a valuation that reflects the new level of responsibility.
On Thursday, Washington said he was still getting daily updates from his agent about ongoing communication with the Jaguars. He kept his message simple, saying he will come out, stay ready and do his job. That is the right public tone at a time when the business side remains unresolved.
What happens next?
For now, the expectation is that Washington will play on Sunday without a fresh extension in place. The Jaguars still have time to keep talking, but the reported timeline suggests this will not be settled before kickoff.
That does not make the situation a distraction in itself.
