The game had already been framed as more than just another Saturday kickoff. On Sept. 11, during the Southern Heritage Classic Luncheon, both coaches noted the importance of the matchup because it was a conference game. By Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. CT, the Classic in Memphis had the full pageantry around it, with the parade and battle of the bands showdown part of the week’s backdrop. But once the football took center stage, the game became about execution, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff executed just a little better when the pressure climbed.
At the end of the third quarter, Arkansas-Pine Bluff led 24-18, and then the fourth quarter arrived with the kind of momentum swing that can break a game open. At 13:45, Michael Henderson intercepted Jaylon Tolbert and returned it for a touchdown to push Arkansas-Pine Bluff ahead 31-18. Alcorn State answered at 12:14 when Fredrick Robinson scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to cut it to 31-24, and the Braves were still very much alive. But Arkansas-Pine Bluff then stretched the lead to 38-24 at 9:40 on Za'Marion Webster’s 54-yard touchdown run, only for Alcorn State to refuse to disappear. At 9:15, Tyree Kelly caught a 68-yard touchdown from Jaylon Tolbert to make it 38-31. Then Damien Jones tied it at 38-38 with 3:50 left, turning a game that looked like it had slipped away into a full-blown fourth-quarter fight.
The hidden damage came earlier
Alcorn State’s problem was never just one play. Credric Thomas’ team left eight points on the table through three missed PATs, one failed 2-point conversion and a missed field goal. In a game that finished 24-20 in Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s favor, those wasted chances were not footnotes. They were the difference between chasing the result and controlling it.
