Saturday’s message from Claudio Giráldez was plain enough: Celta need to compete better at home. The visit of Málaga to Balaídos arrives with that concern still hanging over the start of the LaLiga season, and the coach did not try to hide it. He acknowledged that the team have already shown plenty of good things, but said the results at home must improve if the season is going to move in the right direction.
That is the useful tension in Celta’s early-season picture. Giráldez did not dismiss the work his side have done, saying the football has many positive readings, but he made clear that effort and control have not yet translated into the kind of home return the club wants. Celta have not won this season, which is why the trip to Balaídos feels less like a routine fixture and more like an early check on whether the team can turn decent performances into a first victory.
The coach also pointed to a very specific requirement for the match: Celta must be more aggressive in attacking transitions and in the final third, where they need more arrivals into dangerous areas. His comments suggest the issue is not simply possession or structure, but the ability to turn orderly play into pressure and chances. He said the team must be more focused, press well, stay compact in a low block when needed and make opponents run behind the ball. In other words, the tactical base is there, but the edge has to sharpen.
Injuries add another layer
The squad picture is not ideal either. Giráldez ruled out Andrés Antañón because of an ankle problem, while Febas could return after a chest bruise. Borja Iglesias remains doubtful after renewed discomfort in the soleus area, and the coach said he would be cautious with him. That leaves Celta balancing the need for a cleaner home performance with the reality of a squad that is still being managed carefully.
For a team trying to settle into the season, that combination matters. Home matches are often where a side establishes rhythm and belief, but Celta enter this one still searching for that first league win and still trying to show that their football is producing results. Against Málaga, the story is not only whether they can win. It is whether they can finally make Balaídos look like a place where their ideas carry real force.
