Samsung Foldable Market Competition With Apple Tightens as Z8 Sales Rise 8%

Samsung’s Galaxy Z8 series is opening the Samsung foldable market competition with Apple from a stronger base than last year. The lineup sold 8% more units in its first two weeks than the Galaxy Z7 series, after launching on August 7, 2026.

That early lift matters because Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone next month. Buyers weighing a premium upgrade now face a market where Samsung is already selling into demand, but the next major rival has not entered yet.

Sujeong Lim on Z Fold8 demand

Sujeong Lim estimated that the Z Fold8 accounted for roughly 57% of Z8 series sales during the first two weeks after launch, which means the larger foldable is carrying most of the early volume rather than the clamshell model. “We estimate that the Z Fold 8 accounted for roughly 57% of Z8 series sales during the first two weeks after launch, thanks to a clear and compelling value proposition.”

She also said the first stretch of sales was not smooth at retail because of stockouts at some retailers. “Considering that initial supply was not smooth due to stockouts at some retailers, sales of the Z8 are expected to remain relatively stable as supply normalizes.”

August 7 to August 15, 2026

The comparison window is narrow but useful. Samsung’s Z8 figures cover August 7 to August 15, 2026, while the Galaxy Z7 period ran from July 25 to August 2, 2025, so the 8% gain reflects early buyer response rather than a full-cycle sales result.

That makes the product mix more important than the headline percentage. If 57% of first-two-week sales came from the Z Fold8, Samsung is leaning on a high-priced foldable to set the pace before Apple’s entry can reshape the premium tier.

Apple and Samsung and premium users

Liz Lee said Apple’s foldable iPhone appears to adopt a similar display size and aspect ratio to the Z Fold 8, targeting the high-value premium smartphone market that Samsung has built over six generations. “The successful launch of the Galaxy Z Fold8 will face its most critical test within the next few weeks.”

She added that the central fight is over upgrade behavior, not just shipment totals. “The most critical competitive landscape in the current premium device market is who will lead the upgrade cycle—specifically, the key question will be whether Samsung can retain its existing foldable user base and continue converting premium Galaxy users, as Apple taps into its large iPhone Pro and Pro Max user base while also attracting some existing Android foldable users.”

For buyers, that leaves one practical question in front of release season: whether Samsung can hold its foldable users once Apple shows its own design next month. The first two weeks say Samsung has momentum now; the next two months will show whether that momentum survives a direct challenge.
