The Philadelphia Eagles are still sorting out their new offense, but Sean Mannion has already made the starting point clear. According to comments shared Friday by Jordan Mailata, Mannion told the offensive players, "Our foundation is outside zone."
That is a useful detail for a team entering Week 1 with a new system in place. The offseason changes have created plenty of attention around the passing game, especially with Jalen Hurts and the interceptions that drew scrutiny during training camp. But Mannion's message suggests the run game will be the base of the offense, not just a supporting piece.
The run game comes first
Tyler Steen said Mannion has leaned into that idea since arriving. "Since he's been here, he's put an emphasis on it," Steen said, adding that it has been interesting to see from a former quarterback. Steen also explained why the approach matters: "I think he realizes a lot of the stuff that we do is going to come off the run game, so he wants to put a lot of emphasis on it."
That fits with the broader picture of an offense being installed in the offseason. If outside zone is the foundation, the Eagles will be leaning on a scheme that asks the line, backs and quarterbacks to work together from the ground game outward. For a team preparing for the season opener against the Washington Commanders, that kind of clarity can matter early.
It also gives the Eagles a better sense of what the offense is trying to be before the first snap of Week 1. Rather than waiting to see whether the system leans pass-heavy or run-heavy, Mannion has already put the emphasis on where the offense begins. For Philadelphia, the answer appears to be the run game, with outside zone at the center of it.
