Weather Today In London turned wet on Tuesday as a band of rain swept across the capital and was expected to linger into the early afternoon. The rain intensified as the morning rush hour peaked between 8am and 9am, when thousands of commuters were moving through London.
Simon King of the Weather Centre described conditions as "really quite soggy" on Radio 4's Today. He said: "We’ve had some rain overnight across England and Wales. It’s useful rain but it’s not significant rain to alleviate the drought situation for most of us."
London After Tuesday
The wet weather moved across London overnight from the west, then was expected to work its way south-east before dry conditions returned. Simon King said, "The rain will be more stubborn to clear away in the far south-east."
Temperatures in London were predicted to peak at around 20C, a sharp change from the 28C high recorded on Sunday. London also recorded 25C in west London on Monday, before the cooler spell arrived on Tuesday.
The Met Office forecast
After Tuesday, more settled weather was expected in London, with largely dry days through to the weekend and temperature peaks of between 20C and 23C. The Met Office's long-range forecast pointed to a trend toward longer dry interludes between systems as mid-September approached, while saying a return of the dry, settled weather of the summer looked unlikely.
For commuters, the practical change is immediate: the morning journey was the wettest part of the day, but the cleaner break comes later, when the rain eases and the capital moves back toward drier conditions.
