Two 25-year-old men died after collapsing during the Great North Run on Sunday, organisers said.
The deaths occurred on the half marathon route from Newcastle to South Shields during an event that was being held for the 45th year and included 63,000 runners.
What happened
The men collapsed during the race and later died. The causes of death will be determined in due course.
A Great Run Company spokesperson said the organisers are continuing to support the families during what they described as an incredibly difficult time, and added that their thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew the men.
Why it matters
The Great North Run is one of the biggest mass-participation races in the north-east of England, and the deaths cast a sombre note over a major day on the Great North Run course.
With 63,000 runners taking part, the event was intended to be a major celebration of endurance and community. Instead, the focus shifted to the two young men and the families now waiting for answers.
