Punk guitarist Cheetah Chrome passes at 71, and the Dead Boys said the death of their bandmate and friend was announced on Sunday, Sept. 13. The tribute framed him as more than a player: the band called him “an architect of the punk rock movement.”
Born Eugene Richard O'Connor in Cleveland on Feb. 18, 1955, he joined Rocket from the Tombs in 1974 before forming the Dead Boys with Stiv Bators, Jimmy Zero, Jeff Magnum and Johnny Blitz. His music lives on and will continue to inspire others for generations to come.”
Chrome’s reach did not stop with the original lineup. He took part in several Dead Boys reunions, and the group returned for a 40th anniversary tour in 2017 while also releasing Still Snotty: Young, Loud and Snotty at 40. That kept the catalog active and gave the band another commercial cycle built around its first records.
