The Twins, meanwhile, are still technically within shouting distance of the final AL Wild Card spot, but the gap between technically alive and actually dangerous has become wider by the week. A poor August and a 4-7 start to September have left them running out of time, running out of margin and running into a team that usually enjoys this matchup far too much.
Pitching sets the tone from the start
Monday’s opener brings Will Warren against Dean Kremer at 7:40 pm ET, and Warren has at least given the Yankees a reason to trust the first game of the trip. Since August 19th, he has a 2.22 ERA and 3.84 FIP, which is exactly the sort of recent form a contending club wants when the calendar is tightening. That does not make him untouchable, but it does make him relevant in a series that could shape the mood of this road swing quickly.
Tuesday’s matchup is just as revealing, with Max Fried scheduled to face Bailey Ober at 7:40 pm ET. Then comes Wednesday’s 1:40 pm ET finale, when Carlos Rodón is set to start against Zebby Matthews. That is a proper rotation on paper, and it is one more reason the Yankees should expect to press the issue rather than react to it.
The Twins, to their credit, are still not mathematically finished. But there is a difference between being alive and being convincing, and Minnesota has not looked convincing for a while. The Yankees, by contrast, are in the kind of spot where every series carries a larger meaning. Track down the division lead, keep the run going, avoid the sort of stumble that turns a strong September into a frustrating one — that is the job.
So yes, this is Yankees Vs Twins. But it is also a test of whether New York can handle the sort of series that good teams are supposed to win without much fuss. Minnesota needs a spark. The Yankees need results. That is usually how these games become interesting, even before the first pitch is thrown.
