The immediate reason is simple: Josh Simmons is out. That means Benson, an undrafted rookie, is the next man up for a spot that can change the shape of an offense if it is unstable. The Chiefs are 2.5-point favorites, but point spreads do not keep pressure off a quarterback, and they do not make a first start any less demanding.
Why Benson matters now
Andy Reid made it clear he believes Benson is ready for the assignment. Reid said Benson has done a nice job for the team and has shown the ability to play, adding that the Chiefs would not put him in there if they did not think he could handle it. He also stressed the confidence piece, saying he wants Benson to go out and use his abilities rather than play tentatively. Mahomes backed that idea from the quarterback side. He called it the beauty of football, the next-man-up reality, and said he trusts whoever the coaches put out there because they have earned the chance. That matters in a matchup like this because the Chiefs do not need Benson to be perfect. They need him to be functional enough that the offense can stay on schedule and Mahomes does not have to spend the night improvising around pressure from his left side.
The timing adds another layer. Mahomes said on September 10 that he had built up strength in his knee and was ready to go play football again, and he also noted he would try to keep himself out of harm’s way while still competing. That is the right balance in theory, but it becomes much harder if the protection in front of him breaks down. A quarterback returning from an ACL injury does not need a crisis at left tackle on top of everything else.
What the matchup says about both teams
The Broncos are dealing with their own injury-rehab storyline. Bo Nix sustained a fractured right ankle during the NFL playoffs, and he said he is excited to get back out there and feels like he has been pacing through the same practice schedule for a long time. So this game is not just a division meeting; it is also a matchup shaped by players working their way back into the season and into themselves.
That makes Benson’s start more interesting than a routine depth-chart update. The Chiefs are asking a first-time starter to handle one of the most important spots on the line in a game that should be tight, physical and heavily influenced by protection and pocket integrity. If he holds up, Kansas City can keep the offense balanced. If he does not, the night could quickly become about survival rather than execution.
That is the real test here. The Chiefs may be favored, and Benson may have the support of Reid and Mahomes, but the first NFL start at left tackle is still the kind of moment that exposes whether a team’s depth is merely serviceable or actually trustworthy.
