Kelce has been a problem for Denver for years
Kelce is entering his 14th season at 36-years-old, but he still remains Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target in many of these matchups. Last season, he led the Chiefs in receiving in both games against Denver.
On Nov. 16 last season, Kelce posted 91 yards on nine catches against the Broncos. In the Christmas game, he added 36 yards on five catches. Those are not eye-popping numbers by his standards, but they still show how consistently he stays involved when Kansas City plays Denver.
His Week 11 performance also showed why he remains such a difficult cover. Kelce caught a 10-yard pass against Jahdae Barron, beat Dre Greenlaw on a drag route for 17 yards and hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass against Talanoa Hufanga. That kind of production comes from timing, leverage and the chemistry he has built with Patrick Mahomes over time.
Why the matchup is tricky for Denver
Sean Payton has spoken about the challenge of facing players like Kelce, noting that savvy players flourish when they understand where quarterbacks want them to be and can keep plays alive. He also pointed out that extended plays can be especially damaging, because they force defenses to stay in coverage longer than planned.
That is the issue for Denver in Week 1. The Broncos have several moving parts on defense, including Jahdae Barron, Ja’Quan McMillian, Alex Singleton, Justin Strnad, Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw, but the overall task is the same: keep Kelce from turning routine snaps into long gains.
Denver has already seen what happens when that breaks down. Kelce’s 1,663 receiving yards against the Broncos did not happen by accident, and his history against them makes this one of the most specific matchup problems on the Week 1 schedule.
