Al-Hilal will begin their AFC Champions League Elite group opener against Al-Gharafa at Kingdom Arena without five key players, turning the first match of their continental campaign into an early test of depth.
The most notable absentee is captain Salem Al-Dawsari, who is out for the match. He is one of three defensive absences, with Ali Lajami and Hamad Al-Yami also unavailable, leaving Al-Hilal short of options at the back as the visitors arrive in Riyadh with ambitions of an upset.
Five absences, three in defence
That scale of missing players matters because group openers can set the tone for the whole campaign. Al-Hilal are still expected to carry the greater weight of the match, but they will have to do it without a number of familiar names.
The defensive issue is the clearest concern. Losing three players in that area reduces flexibility and places more pressure on the remaining back line to stay compact and organised against an opponent who has little to lose and plenty to gain.
Watkins setback adds to the problem
The situation was made worse after Ollie Watkins suffered an injury in recent training. That leaves Al-Hilal managing not just one headline absence, but a wider issue across the squad as they prepare for a match that should have been a statement start to their continental campaign.
For Al-Gharafa, the circumstances create an opening. A side travelling with upset ambitions will look at the missing names and sense that this is a chance to make the opener uncomfortable for the home team.
For Al-Hilal, the challenge is straightforward. They still have the quality to control the match, but now they must prove they can do it without five key players and still deliver the kind of result expected at Kingdom Arena.
