This is exactly the kind of September series that tells you where everyone really stands. The Red Sox arrive in Texas with momentum, the Rangers are still trying to chase down the Houston Astros in the AL West, and the first game immediately looks like the most meaningful one: Patrick Sandoval against Jacob deGrom at 8:05 PM ET on NESN.
That is not a soft landing for Boston, because deGrom already handled the Red Sox in June 2026 by working 6.0 innings and allowing 2 runs. It was the sort of outing that reminded everyone how quickly a game can tilt when one starter owns the strike zone and the other side is left reacting. Now the Red Sox get the matchup again, and this time the stakes are even harder to ignore.
A series with real consequence
The Red Sox are deep into a season-ending stretch and have won at least five straight games for the fourth time since July 1, which is no small thing this late in the year. They have also spent enough of the summer proving they can be a nuisance that the idea of playing spoiler in a division race no longer feels like a stretch. Back in late June, that might have looked like the ceiling for this team. Not anymore.
The Rangers, meanwhile, are still in the fight. Houston leads them by one game in the AL West, so every result in this series matters beyond the immediate box score. That is what gives the opener its edge. Sandoval against deGrom is already a difficult assignment; Sandoval against deGrom with a division chase hanging overhead is a proper test of nerve.
What comes next may matter just as much
The rest of the series is set up to keep the pressure on. Jake Bennett is scheduled to face MacKenzie Gore on Wednesday, September 16, also at 8:05 PM ET on NESN, before Sonny Gray is listed to start on Monday, September 17 against a TBD Rangers starter. That third-game note is telling in itself: the Rangers had not yet listed their starter, which adds another layer of uncertainty to a series already loaded with it.
Boston do not need to win the whole argument in one night, but they do need to be competitive against deGrom from the start. If they are not, the Rangers can turn this into the kind of series that tightens a pennant race and leaves the Red Sox merely admiring the pressure from the outside. If they are, then the opener may become the night this race got a lot more uncomfortable for Texas.
