They are the only Premier League team without a point after four games and, just as damning, they still have not scored a goal. That is not a slow start. That is a warning siren.
And yes, the fixture list has not been kind. Two of those games were away to Arsenal and Manchester City, which is the sort of opening sequence that can make any newly promoted side look raw. But raw is one thing. Goalless and pointless through four matches is another entirely, especially for a club back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after winning the Championship.
A bad start, but not an automatic sentence
The uncomfortable truth for Coventry is that history does leave a little room for hope. Southampton lost their first four Premier League games in 2012-13 and still avoided relegation. Everton were the most recent team to stay up after losing their first four in 2024-25. The league has seen worse-looking starts than this survive.
But context cuts both ways. Frank de Boer’s Crystal Palace side failed to score or win in their first five games in 2017-18, and Roy Hodgson later had to rescue them after they went seven games without a goal or point. Portsmouth in 2009-10 failed to win their first seven. Norwich lost their first six in 2021-22. In other words, Coventry are not in historic no-man’s-land, but they are already drifting into dangerous company.
What the numbers really say
The most important detail is not just that Coventry have lost four straight. It is how little margin for error they have created for themselves. When you are still searching for your first point in mid-September, every missed chance, every sloppy moment and every soft concession starts to feel heavier. That is how pressure builds on a promoted side: not all at once, but game by game, until the table starts to look like a verdict.
There is no need to panic over one result alone, even a 5-0 loss to Brighton on Sunday. But there is also no need to pretend this is anything other than a deeply awkward opening. Coventry have shown they can get back to the Premier League. Now they have to show they belong there. At the moment, Villa Score would tell you they are still miles from that answer.
