Wizards of the Coast has unveiled new Reality Fracture commander decklist details, including four debut cards and the first look at empower Jace. The mainline Magic: The Gathering set is scheduled for release on Oct. 2, with the story centered on The Echoverse and Jace Beleren’s role in it.
Mark Rosewater said the new mechanic was built to fit a long-requested what if set. “Doing another ‘what if’ set is a frequent player request, so it was something I’ve been on the lookout to do for years,” he said, adding that the story finally gave the set its shape.

Rosewater said, “The only brand new mechanic is empower Jace.” He described it as a variation on amass from War of the Spark, but with a different result: the mechanic creates a planeswalker token rather than a creature token.
That shift is the set’s clearest rules change. Rosewater said Magic has never made common planeswalkers before, and that common cards creating a planeswalker token opened space the game had not previously explored. He also said empower Jace was popular from the first playtest and stayed in the set.
The Echoverse changes course
The set’s structure changed during design. Rosewater said Wizards initially planned to spread the expansion across a whole number of planes in The Echoverse, then narrowed it to one plane after feedback on March of the Machine. The first plane considered was Mirrodin Pure.
Wizards later moved to Hexhaven, which Rosewater described as a what if version of Strixhaven. He said ally-colored colleges were the cleanest way to build that version of the setting. Meris Mullaley added that Hexhaven gave newer Magic: The Gathering players a recent setting they would recognize, with Secrets of Strixhaven preceding it as the last multiverse set.
Reality Fracture cards ahead
Wizards says Reality Fracture will bring warped cards and characters into Magic: The Gathering, with favorite legends taking on new colors and familiar cards twisted into new versions. The story is built around Jace Beleren and the way it reshapes the Multiverse.
The immediate takeaway for players is narrower than the story pitch but more useful: four new cards are now in view, empower Jace is the set’s only new mechanic, and the Oct. 2 release date sets the next point when the full Commander and the Echoverse picture will be clear.
