Vanderbilt has canceled its 2028 road game at NC State and will owe a $1 million fee for pulling out of the scheduled trip to Carter-Finley Stadium.
The move changes a home-and-home series that was originally scheduled in 2015 and adds another adjustment to both programs' non-conference plans. Vanderbilt will now host Virginia on Sept. 16, 2028, instead of playing at NC State, while the Wolfpack's 2028 non-conference schedule drops to two opponents after the cancellation.
What the cancellation means
For Vanderbilt, the change avoids the return visit to Raleigh and shifts the Commodores' 2028 slate toward a home date against Virginia. That game is set for the same day, with the return trip to Charlottesville now scheduled for 2031.
For NC State, the cancellation removes one game from a non-conference schedule that was already built around a limited number of opponents. The Wolfpack now have two non-conference opponents listed for 2028 after Vanderbilt opted out of the agreement.
Vanderbilt and NC State have a long history together. The programs first met in 1946, then played again in the 2012 Music City Bowl and the 2016 Independence Bowl. Their next scheduled meeting had been set to begin this Saturday at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., before the future road game was canceled.
The headline item here is the fee: Vanderbilt's decision to back out of the 2028 trip comes with a $1 million price tag. It is a reminder that college football scheduling can change well in advance, but those changes usually come with a cost.
