Dawson Knox said the uncertainty around his future with the Buffalo Bills never fully sat right with him, but in the end, he wanted to stay in Buffalo for reasons that went well beyond football.
Speaking before Thursday's home opener against the Detroit Lions at the new Highmark Stadium, Knox opened up about fatherhood, his wife's Buffalo roots and what it meant to remain with the team after an offseason in which his future was not guaranteed.
Knox says fatherhood has changed his perspective
Knox's daughter was born in December, and he described that experience as one of the biggest blessings in his life. He said being a dad has been "absolutely unreal" and called it one of the greatest joys he has ever had. Knox also said watching his wife become a mother has been a major part of that joy, and that coming home to see both of them smiling puts everything in perspective.
That personal life, he said, has also carried over into how he approaches his job. Knox explained that taking care of his family has helped him think more clearly about leadership, responsibility and how he shows up in the locker room. In his view, the lessons of home translate directly to football.
Buffalo is more than just a place Knox plays
Knox also pointed to his wife's connection to Buffalo and said that became a meaningful part of why he wanted to remain with the Bills. He joked that she did not know much about football when they first started dating, but he also said her Buffalo background and the city's support made a lasting impression on him.
For Knox, that bond mattered just as much as the football side of the decision. He said the people in Western New York and the support from Bills Mafia were a huge reason he wanted to stay, and that there was nowhere else he would rather be.
The offseason uncertainty was real
Knox also acknowledged that his future with the team was not completely settled before the season. He said he knew the situation would have to become a restructure or a release, and that he had to think through what it would mean if he were moved on from. He said that possibility was not easy for him or his wife to sit with.
In the end, though, it worked out for both sides. Knox said he and his wife kept praying through the situation and wanted to do whatever it took to stay in Buffalo. With the Bills moving into their home opener, that uncertainty is now in the past, and Knox appears focused on making the most of his place with the team for as long as possible.
