Sometimes the most interesting roster moves are the ones that sit just beneath the surface. In Denver’s case, the question is not whether the Nuggets need more talent. It is whether they can find a cheap swing with enough upside to matter when the margins are already tight.
That is why Cam Whitmore has become a name to watch. Marc Stein reported that the Nuggets have emerged as a team to watch in pursuit of Whitmore, a former first-round pick whose path has already taken a sharp turn since the 2023 NBA Draft. Whitmore was selected 20th overall in 2023, then recently waived by Cleveland after the Cavaliers acquired him as part of a five-team megatrade.
For Denver, the timing makes sense. The Nuggets are set to kick off their regular season next month, and they still have one open traditional roster spot. That matters because the back end of the roster has already been thinned out by changes that have taken scoring out of the bench mix. The article notes that since DeMar DeRozan signed his one-year deal, Denver has had 14 traditional roster spots taken.
There is also a straightforward basketball argument here. Whitmore is being framed as a cheap, high-upside veteran option for the back end of the roster, and that is exactly the kind of profile a contending team can justify. The Nuggets do not need a major overhaul. They need a player who can survive in a limited role, provide some scoring punch and give them a little more upside than a purely placeholder signing.
That said, this is not the kind of move that solves Denver’s bigger questions by itself. Losing bench contributors always leaves a ripple effect, and the names mentioned in that context matter: Peyton Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jonas Valanciunas and Bruce Brown all represent either departures or changes that affect the rotation picture. If the Nuggets are going to stay at contender level, they need the right kind of depth, not just more bodies.
Whitmore fits the logic of a team that is trying to keep its options open without spending much to do it. Denver has an open spot, a need for scoring on the second unit and a reason to keep hunting for value. In a league where the final roster decisions often say as much as the headline additions, this is the kind of pursuit that can tell you how a contender thinks.
