Wales women rugby ended a nine-game Test losing streak in emphatic style on Saturday, beating South Africa 50-5 in Cardiff in the WXV Global Series opener.
The result gave Wales a much-needed lift after a difficult run and was built on a dominant first half. Wales scored three tries inside the opening quarter and had already moved into a 38-5 lead by half-time.
Early control set the tone
Once Wales got on top, South Africa had no way back. A key moment came when Danelle Lochner's yellow card for a high tackle on Kate Williams was upgraded to a 20-minute red card at half-time, adding to the pressure on the visitors and leaving Wales in complete control of the contest.
From there, Wales kept the scoreboard moving. Sisilia Tuipulotu scored again in the second period, while South Africa responded with tries through Maria Tshiremba and Maceala Samboya. Even so, Wales stayed comfortably ahead and reached 50 points when Alex Callender crossed to seal the win.
A new standard for Wales
Jonathan Davies described it as a brilliant performance and said Wales were comfortable all night, adding that they had set a new standard. That will be the key takeaway for Wales as much as the scoreline itself: after a long losing run, they needed a performance that was decisive, composed and complete.
With a convincing win to open the WXV Global Series, Wales now have a clear benchmark to build from. Breaking the nine-game Test losing streak matters, but doing it with a 50-point total makes the message even stronger.
