Caleb Taylor was the kind of surprise the Emmys wanted from Taylor Swift: a secret pre-taped parody appearance with Mariska Hargitay that stayed hidden until Monday night. Swift played a fellow detective in the Law & Order: SVU bit, and the sketch ended with the cat she suggested adding the night before.
Jesse Collins said the show filmed the parody under tight security in late August on the SVU set, with only a small group involved. Dionne Harmon, Jesse Collins and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay spoke after Monday night's Emmy telecast wrapped, laying out how the idea moved from an early pitch to the finished bit.
Hargitay, Swift, and the script
Dionne Harmon said Taylor Swift and Mariska Hargitay are genuine friends, and that friendship shaped how the sketch came together. The idea for it was among the first to surface when Hargitay met with writers led by Ariel Dumas, and the premise centered on the SVU team trying to figure out how or if Swift would show up at the Emmys.
Jesse Collins said Swift loved the script and had thoughts that were worked in. He said Swift wanted the Easter eggs to be really official and correct, while Jeannae Rouzan-Clay said everyone felt they had to one up what everyone was thinking and that throwing Swift into an SVU sketch seemed like the coolest way to do it.
The cat in the scene
Jen Neal said Swift has watched almost every single episode of SVU and named her cat Olivia Benson. Collins said the cat in Swift's arms at the end of the sketch was the real Olivia Benson, which turned a quick cameo into a more specific piece of fan knowledge than a standard awards-show gag.
Collins said the cat idea came the night before, when Swift suggested, “What if I put the cat in the scene?” He added, “And we were like, that would be awesome. So we did it. And the cat delivered!”
Under wraps on SVU
“And this was Mariska’s friend, so we made a promise to Taylor that we would keep it under wraps,” Collins said. He added, “When you make a promise to Captain Benson, you keep it. We don’t want to go to awards show jail.”
That secrecy mattered because the cameo was built to land as a live-telecast surprise even though it was taped in advance. Collins said, “The ‘SVU’ set is like walking into Mariska’s home,” and added, “And she made everybody comfortable, especially Taylor.”
Rouzan-Clay said there would be an SVU presence and some dun-duns, and that the goal was to give viewers something they did not see coming. This was the cleanest possible use of Swift’s name on an awards show: a controlled, pre-taped reveal, a small shoot, and one last-night note that changed the ending of the sketch.
