Edmen Shahbazyan is getting exactly the kind of assignment that can either restore some shine or expose just how much work remains. On Saturday at Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, he meets Bruno Ferreira in the UFC 331 prelims, and for Shahbazyan the location matters almost as much as the fight itself.
This is his first home-area fight in nearly five years, a detail that gives the whole thing a little extra weight. Shahbazyan said on Monday that it is good to be back in L.A., fighting in his hometown where his friends and family are, and you can understand why that matters. He trained as a teenager under Ronda Rousey, left for Las Vegas nearly five years ago, and now gets to walk into a building he already knows from the other side of the ropes. He has watched the Lakers in the old Staples Center. He has watched UFC there too. Now he gets to live that scene himself.

Shahbazyan called it historical, said it has a different vibe, and made no secret that this was a bucket-list type of night for him. That is not empty talk. That is the backdrop Saturday cannot erase. But it does give Shahbazyan a chance to show that the story is not finished. He described Ferreira as a wild, explosive fighter who comes in swinging and comes for a fight, but he also made the key point himself: he believes his skills are a lot higher. That is the kind of line that sounds nice before the bell and has to be proven once the first clean shot lands.
