The Dallas Cowboys cannot afford a slow start to the season, and their home opener against the Commanders already feels like an early defining moment. The reason is simple: Jayden Daniels has shown he can hurt Dallas on the ground, and the Cowboys have to prove they can contain a mobile quarterback before the season outlook becomes much harder to manage.
That matters because the numbers around an 0-2 start are unforgiving. Since 1990, only 35 of 287 teams have gone on to reach the postseason after beginning 0-2, which is why Week 2 carries extra weight for Dallas after opening 0-1.
Daniels has already caused Dallas problems
Daniels does not need a huge volume of designed runs to change a game. Against Dallas in three matchups, he has rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns, which is exactly the kind of production that can tilt a divisional meeting.
Dallas also saw enough in Week 1 to know where the concern lies. The Cowboys allowed Jaxson Dart 54 rushing yards on 11 carries, and that is the same broad problem they now have to solve against Washington: keeping a quarterback from turning broken structure into easy yards.
Daniels was not especially busy on designed runs against the Eagles in Week 1, finishing with two designed runs for two yards. But he still found room to scramble three times for 29 yards, and that is the area Dallas must be most alert to if the game becomes loose or chaotic.
Why the home opener matters
This is not just about one matchup. It is about whether the Cowboys can settle themselves early and avoid chasing the season from the wrong side of the ledger.
A home opener usually offers a chance to reset after Week 1. For Dallas, it is also a chance to show they can defend space, keep the pocket disciplined and prevent Daniels from turning third downs into momentum plays with his legs.
The wider defensive challenge will be about trust and structure. Mobile quarterbacks punish hesitation, and Dallas need a cleaner response than they showed in Week 1 if they want the game to stay on their terms.
The players who have to help contain him
The Cowboys will need multiple defenders involved to keep Daniels in check, especially in the open field. Donvan Ezeiruaku and Frankie Luvu are among the names likely to matter in the effort to close down rushing lanes and force Washington's quarterback to stay inside the pocket.
