A Nor Easter could form off the Northeast coast late this week, with winds starting to pick up late Tuesday and unsettled weather peaking late week. The setup could bring rain, high surf, coastal flooding and delays along the busy I-95 corridor.
As much as several inches of rain could fall across the region, and heavy rain along the coast could raise flash flooding concerns. Gusty winds could also cause power outages and travel delays along the coast and potentially inland.
The GFS and The European
The Weather Channel said the system could potentially strengthen as it heads into the weekend. The storm is unfolding earlier than typical Nor’easters, which usually bring heavy snow in late fall and winter, and this one is expected to bring rain instead of snow.
The forecast split is the main reason the impact picture is still changing. The GFS model is bringing the low closer to shore than The European model, which keeps it farther offshore, and that difference changes how much rain, wind and coastal flooding reaches the region.
East Coast late week
An area of high pressure near the Great Lakes and an area of low pressure moving from south to north along the East Coast is the setup behind the system. A closer track would favor stronger winds and heavier coastal rain; a farther offshore track would limit the worst of those impacts.
