Erickson of IndyStar has predicted a 38-21 win for the Kansas City Chiefs, pointing to the Colts' poor Week 1 showing and the challenge of facing one of the league's best quarterbacks on the road.
The teams meet on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 8:20 p.m. ET in Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City as part of NFL Week 2 on Sunday Night Football. It is a national showcase for Indianapolis after a difficult opener, while Kansas City arrives off an impressive game on Monday Night Football to begin the season.
Why the prediction leans toward Kansas City
Erickson's logic is straightforward: Indianapolis got off to a terrible start in the season opener, and that kind of performance is hard to shake in a single week against a good opponent. He also said that until the Colts prove they can stop anybody defensively, it is difficult to picture them putting up much of a fight against one of the NFL's elite quarterbacks.
That is the central issue in this matchup. The Colts cannot simply rely on a cleaner offensive showing if the defense is still vulnerable. Against a team like the Chiefs, any weakness is likely to be exposed quickly, especially in a game with the spotlight of Sunday Night Football.
Arrowhead adds to the challenge
Playing at Arrowhead Stadium only increases the pressure on Indianapolis. The atmosphere, the stage and the opponent all point in the same direction: the Colts need a far better overall performance than they produced in Week 1 if they are to keep the game competitive.
