Hideo Kojima Physint lost Sony funding after a June Zoom call in which Sony told Hideo Kojima it could no longer finance development. Kojima said the decision hit with no explanation he could make sense of, and it put Kojima Productions’ next move under pressure.
In that meeting, Kojima brought Kojima Productions president Shinji Hirano and head of talent development Aki Saito. He said his first reaction was, “What did you say?” and then, “What am I going to do with my studio?”
June Zoom call
Kojima said he was already working on OD and Physint when Sony asked for the call. That matters because he said Kojima Productions had only two projects at the time, so losing one contract was not a side issue; it went straight to how the studio was structured.
He also said he might have had to cut the people working on Physint if the contract disappeared. For a studio built around a narrow slate, that is a staffing problem, not just a funding note. When one project carries that much weight, the internal planning is as fragile as the financing.
Kojima Productions and Xbox
Kojima Productions later said Physint development continues to move forward with Xbox, and that its relationship with PlayStation remains strong. That split matters: the project did not stop, but its support shifted, which keeps the work alive while changing the business path behind it.
Kojima said he did not understand Sony’s reason for ending funding. The practical takeaway for Kojima Productions is simple enough: the studio kept Physint moving by leaning on Xbox, but the unanswered question is why Sony walked away in the first place.
